Trained musicians process sounds better and perform better in hearing tests.

Trained musicians process sounds better and perform better in hearing tests. Not a musician? Older rats can undergo “intense auditory training” and improve their hearing too. Of course, you can still pretend you didn’t hear!

Interesting stats.

Interesting stats..odd that users shifted so dramatically to “Students” within 3 weeks. Lots of inactive accounts. Would be good to know if the number of active users changed from July (go up or down?).

Fascinating sociolinguistic analysis of gender differences (and political affiliations) in language use online.

Fascinating sociolinguistic analysis of gender differences (and political affiliations) in language use online. Guilty as charged. So why do women use emoticons and exclamation points more often than men? I do it to convey context in place of body language. If you can’t see my face, how do you know if I’m serious, flippant, or just kidding. Do men not care if they are misunderstood?

So proud to live in the first county in the eastern US that has begun a curbside food scrap pickup that will “collect such material from potato peels to coffee grounds and turn them into rich, earthy compost suitable for the garden or the farm field.” Save on landfill and sewage treatment fees and keep the Chesapeake Bay clean! Go Green, Maryland! I’ve always wished I could compost food scraps effectively at home, but I confess to being squeamish about those wriggly worms.

In the Land of the Dragons

Drakolimni (= Dragon lake) is the name of several alpine or sub-alpine lakes in northwestern Greece Epirus periphery. According to local folktales the lakes used to be inhabited by dragons that fought each other by throwing pines and rocks and thus created the peculiar landscape and gave their names to the lakes. Drakolimni of Tymfi resides at an altitude of 2100m above sea level, on the mountain range of Tymfi and is inhabited by a species of alpine newt, called drakakia by the locals. According to local sources, the newts’ resemblance to small dragons gives the lake its distinctive name.
