Denmark: one week, two conferences

The first was on acid-base regulation and proton transport, 49th in a series that was first organized by legendary Danish scientists Hans Ussing and Nobelist Jens Skou. The Ussing chamber is a classical apparatus used to measure electrical current across a layer of cells known as epithelium, as a proxy for the ions that are transported in and out of the cells. Skou discovered one of the most important of these transporter proteins, known as the sodium pump. The meeting was held at the historic Sandbjerg estate, near Sonderburg, which dates back to the 16th century and eventually ended up with the family of author Isak Dinesan (real name, Karen Blixen) of Out of Africa fame (http://www.sandbjerg.dk/en/). It is now owned by Aarhus University, to the enjoyment of lucky researchers! The second conference was to celebrate the achievements of a colleague, Poul Nissen, structural biologist extraordinaire, of Aarhus University. Poul received the Novo Nordisk prize for his beautiful atomic structures of ion pumps, including the sodium pump that was discovered by Jens Skou. We stayed at Norsminde Kro (Kro=inn) and the science talks were at Mosegaard museum. Back to Aarhus, where the sun barely sets, before heading back home.

    How interesting.


    I did my PhD in the lab of Gregers Rom Andersen starting with a bachelor’s project around the time Thomas Lykke Møller Sørensen and Poul Nissen were looking at the first electron density maps of SERCA.


    University of Aarhus is definitely lucky to have the Sandbjerg estate for meetings. It’s a nice venue.

    Wow! Fly to Copenhagen airport, take the metro to to Freetown Christiana in Copenhagen, ( where they have a different kind of acid) and you’re just a 20-minute train ride away.

    Folmer Fredslund happy to meet a fellow scientist here. SERCA has now been captured in more than 20 distinct conformations! Poul and his group have really opened up the ion pump field. Had a great time in Denmark, thanks.

    Great u can still go to scientific conferences! Where I work, support has not been there for close to 10 years now. A bit better in the last several years, but they like for only one or two to go.

    James Benson that’s really too bad! As you know, communication is essential to the scientific endeavor….publications count, of course, but conferences are where the collaborations are forged and new ideas sparked. We’ve all been in a dry spell for funding so long that young people are turning away from a career in science.

    Thanks to the efforts and contacts of my former head prof. Paweł Migula, our department has cooperated with the University of Aarhus. The result was scientific cooperation and personal contacts – which last for years. My colleagues remember nice meetings from that period.


    It was organized Polish-Danish Schools of Environmental Protection. We collaborated in the Baltic University project. The effect of this cooperation was also scientific publications, mainly in the field of ecotoxicology – which is the main research profile of my department.


    At the time, I was mainly involved in the typographic processing of printed educational materials and other publications.
