HELP!

To my friends (and especially those that share Byron Burris as a friend on G+)… please make a statement regarding the fact that Google+ cancelled his Google account (access to everything Google) without good reason…

Google+ , I have known this man since he was 10 years old and he is a good man…. as good as they come… I even brought him over to G+. He was waving the Google Flag all over Facebook because, he like me, saw the light… this was the place to be. So you guys need to make this right immediately.

PLEASE post a statement such as this and be sure to include the following…

Google Google+ Natalie Villalobos

Was he using his real name? I would like to see some clarity on this for I too would rather post under a pseudonym than my real name. It seems the nymwars* have died down a little but I am not going to risk deletion for a fancier name. It would be nice of google to take an official stance on this issue. I don’t know if that’s the reason for his deletion but either way, google has some clearing up to do.

He was using his own name. I remember the Nymwars from when I joined G+, Koen De Paus . It’s totally died down now and I see pseudonyms everywhere. Personally, I would rather see a real name, but then ..what’s real anyway? 🙂

There seems to be some action on this particular case anyway. I believe the right people have a hold of his profile url and are looking into it.

If you happen to find out why he was deleted, feel free to drop a note here. 🙂

I know what you are saying, many use a fake name as a mask and start behaving in nasty ways. I am not one of those! ^^

It’s just that my ‘real’ name was picked by my parents and while there is nothing wrong with it, it doesn’t really say anything about what kind of person I am. A long time ago I chose one for myself which I like a lot more; Προμηθεύς from Greek mythology > Prometheus (Greek: Προμηθεύς, “Forethinker”) is a titan, the son of Iapetus, brother to Atlas. He was a champion of mankind who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals. Which can be interpreted as him being an advocate of technology, wresting power from the hands of gods/nature and giving it to mankind. It goes much deeper and further than that and I really identify with the core of this myth. I would never tarnish this name cause I love it more than my own.

Perhaps kinda cocky to name yourself after a godlike titan but hey that’s how I roll. 😉

Koen De Paus , what does your avatar mean? I’d like to think it is a proton, even if not capitalized 🙂 Just to clarify, you are saying that Koen is your given name but you’d like to be Prometheus (Unbound)?

This post should remind us to back up any data that we need; this is a timely warning for the rest of us. I know storing data is not the same as getting the account back but it is good insurance and Google Plus provides this feature. https://www.google.com/settings/exportdata?tab=4

Very useful reminder, Kevin Clift . Thanks for the link.

    Thread highjacking starts here 🙂

“you’d Like to be prometheus” is perhaps a step too far considering the part where he gets his liver eaten by an eagle over and over again. 😉 but Yep, Koen De Paus is my actual birthname and I do have a huge thing for the Prometheus myth. Many aspects of the myth resonate with me, partially because it so easily lends itself for reinterpretation through a modern lens. Although not very convenient for use in daily life, the greek spelling; Προμηθεύς looks very aesthetically pleasing to my eye. :p

Personally I think the world would grow more original and interesting if people would name themselves. Names could reflect parts of your personality, something you really like, something you stand for or a combination of these.

Which is one of the reasons why I am not okay with google’s policy although there are many others you could come up with on why such regulation might not necessarily be a good idea. Mine has nothing to do with anonymity because I don’t want to hide that I am also known as Koen De Paus, but a case for anonymity can still be made as well. It’s just sad that trolls are giving it such a bad reputation.

My avatar refers to humanity +, the international logo of the transhumanist movement.

You are welcome to threadjack anytime, Koen De Paus 🙂 I have a Dutch colleague who spells his name Coen. The Dutch contingent at conferences can be recognized a mile away because they tower over everyone else. I think I read somewhere that the Netherlands holds the record for average height.

I had not seen the humanist logo before, thanks for the explanation.

As for the trolls, it’s just as easy for them to use a plausible fake name as it would an obvious one.

  9. What happened Rajini Rao ?

  10. Rajini Rao says:

I believe his account is back online now, Jose M. G. Guerreiro . I don’t know what the problem was but perhaps John B can give us the answer.

Languages and their silly idiosyncrasies. ^^

Although Coen and Koen look similar, the oe in my name is pronounced oo (as in book). I guess its similar to how the ea used in steal and earth is pronounced differently in English. This kinda stuff really makes it harder than it should be 😉

Being close to 2 meters tall myself, I am not finding that very hard to believe. :p It’s an interesting topic of discussion. A 150 years ago the dutch were among the smallest of Europe’s people and I don’t think there is a consensus yet on just why we grew so much. I like mysteries. I like the theory that it has to do with “spreading the wealth” but that could be a political bias. :p

“Hey guys I want to say THANK YOU for all your support, Ya’ll have been GREAT thank you once again and I promise to behave.”

Yep Byron Burris is back! Perhaps we can get the info straight from the source?

  13. Byron Burris says:

Hey guys I posted a couple of racy photos with cartoon characters to a friend and only one friend, they got censored so I deleted the post. The next morning my account had been disabled. I have read the terms of service that I could find but see nothing about this in them, I guess I am reading the correct one. They are very vague at best, I am using my real name etc. all info is correct. I am not sure if I did something else that might have violated the terms of service I have received no emails to let me know and I got no warning before my account was disabled and when your account is disabled you lose everything not just the service of the offense. I have been watching a site that gets censored multiple times a day for posting racy pics so I am guessing that might not have been what I did. Maybe I will get a courtesy email to let me know because I do not want to do it again. Thanks Byron Burris

  14. Rajini Rao says:

Glad it worked out, Byron Burris , welcome back!

  15. Byron Burris says:

  17. Byron Burris says:
