Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey tells a similar tale, set in Boston and published in 1941. I’ve read this book to my kids when they were little many times 🙂

A friend of mine did the same thing the other day! There is an alternate highway into the city, but no one takes it because there is a $1 toll tunnel each way. My friend was driving along it and stopped for a turtle crossing. She said made sure it got to the other side before driving off. No cars or congestion, turtle watch, all for $1 🙂
Well, the rest of us were sitting in traffic..
Those ducks will probably grow up and appear in great jokes our children will tell like, A duck walks into a bar and asks the bartender, “Has my brother been in here?” The bartender responds, “What does he look like?”
