I am lucky to have a 20 year old daughter who posted this today…coincidentally, this was going to be my only contribution to the events of 10 years ago. Imagine that.

I have mixed feelings about that song. It says one thing needed for peace is “no religion.” To stamp out religion from the world would require eliminating everyone who believes in and follows God (like me). The process of eliminating everyone who has faith in God would be a pretty violent enterprise, it seems to me.

  2. Wow, I never thought I’d see the day when John Lennon was labeled “violent.” I hope you will listen again or read the lyrics, because that is the complete opposite of his message. He was “imagining” a world without countries, which would mean “no religion, too.” He was not saying the world would be better off without it. Quite the contrary. John Lennon was a strong advocate of spiritual freedoms and was a leader inspiring tolerance and peace. He would never condone eliminating people for anything and would be the first to stand in protest for such action – as he did often in his life.

“Nothing to kill or die for” immediately precedes “no religion too”. πŸ™‚

Samantha, thanks for those insights. I’ve heard/read enough atheists say in the past that the world would be better off without religious people that it begins to sound a little ominous somehow, and maybe that rubbed off on my thinking as I thought about this song.

  5. Thank you, Sherri – I’m glad you’re open to see this in another light. John Lennon was all about peace and really inspired others to just love each other. That is central to my Christian beliefs. Tolerance, peace, love.

Ravi Shankar Vaidyanathan , I know exactly where you’re coming from…been there too. Yes…Dylan would make an awesome god! We do need a new incarnation for this generation though πŸ˜‰

  7. HAHA Well, this has taken an interesting turn! Just literally made me laugh out loud! πŸ™‚

Sorry, Samantha, I didn’t mean to take your post in a different direction. I just decided to voice the silent thoughts that sometimes came to mind when I hear that song…but in turn it took your post on an odd turn. My apologies.

Hi Sherri Vance , I think Samantha was smiling at the two born-again Brahmins converting to Bob Dylanism.

  10. No need to apologize, Sherri Vance! It’s Rajini Rao’s post, and it’s all good! And yes, I was laughing at the new Church of Dylan! I was going to say OMG, but perhaps I should say OMD?
