Yesterday, on Earth Day, tens of thousands of scientists and science enthusiasts across the world took to the streets to march for science in an unprecedented show of solidarity. We came wearing white lab coats, pink knit brain caps and costumes. We sang, chanted and cheered. We carried signs that were prophetic, political, nerdy, funny, witty and even obscure. Here are some of my favorite signs and photographs from various marches. Thanks to Chris Robinson for marching with me in Chicago, where we were both attending our respective science conferences, and taking some great photographs. Tell us if you marched (and where) and feel free to post photos of your favorite signs in the comments!

Russ Abbott awesome march photos, thanks for sharing. Yes, it’s crazy that we even need to march :/

  2. Chad Haney says:

I marched in Honolulu with a few colleagues attending our scientific conference. They said it was about 1,000 people but it felt like more. It was great to hear the support from the honking cars.

That’s me in the red shirt and baseball cap, by the tent.

  3. Rajini Rao says:

Chad Haney yay, I see you! Missed you in Chicago. My D Anjana was with me. Hard to believe there were 40k in Chicago, we were such an orderly crowd. 🙂

  4. Chad Haney says:

Glad Anjana could march with you. I’m sure Beatnik boy was with you in spirit.

  5. Rajini Rao says:

By the way, how do I get comments to show up for the individual pix? I wrote an explanation on the F31 not F36 sign but it doesn’t show up in this new UI.

  6. Chad Haney says:

Comments show up if you use Google Photos app to share to G+. However, the comments are really on the Photos app. When they split photos into a separate app, they really screwed up G+.

  7. Chad Haney says:

BTW, I can see the comment via mobile G+ app.

  8. Rajini Rao says:

Chad Haney Can’t see it on my iPhone app. Maybe there’s a newer version.

  9. Rajini Rao says:

Alejandro Cañete hey! Nice to see you here 😊

  10. Rajini Rao I can see your comments on the individual pictures, using both the PC and my phone. Here is a screenshot from my PC :

  11. Rajini Rao says:

Blue W science research funding comes from the government Or grassroots foundations. They are not tied to profits. They are tied to publishable results, however. Basic research is, by definition, not profit driven. Universities are nonprofit organizations. Industry research is profit driven though. Not sure how many of our industry colleagues marched.

  12. Rajini Rao says:

Saurabh Gupta thanks! I’ll check my mobile app then.

  13. Ari de Lima says:

Sinto orgulho de ser um dos seus milhares de seguidores!!!

  14. I did the San Francisco march, and it rocked. It’s amazing how much solidarity was generated, especially since many scientists are rather contrarian by nature.

  15. We wish to U and u’r Friends

All the best wishes for MARCH FOR SCIENCE Exhibition

On festive event of EARTH DAY

  16. Chad Haney says:

Rajini Rao, I marched with a guy who works for Philips (clinical MRI applications engineer). My colleague and I had dinner with him after the march. At the rally during the conference, I stood next to a colleague that works for Bruker (they manufacture the MRI scanners I use). All around a smashing success in my book.

So to answer the question, scientists from industry care about the march too and participated.

  17. Rajini Rao says:

Chad Haney that’s wonderful, makes sense that science everywhere will be impacted by this administration’s policies.

  18. Rajini Rao says:

Steve Esterly there were missteps though, and many opportunities missed. ScienceMarch DC in particular have been poorly organized and many of my colleagues have been frustrated dealing with them. Our work does not stop here, though, and I hope we continue to push on and do better.

  19. Chad Haney says:

Funding cuts will hurt the science equipment vendors bigly. The clinical equipment manufacturers might not get hurt as much or perhaps the effect will be delayed for them.

  20. Rajini Rao says:

There’s also the chilling effect of the new immigration policy on both private industry and academic research.

  21. Cheers and Greetings!

  22. Rajini Rao — of course. While the marches make a statement and help energize people, we need concrete action that goes beyond what protest can achieve.

  23. Yeah , I’m sure he’s listening and taking notes..

  24. Chad Haney says:

FYI, the only remaining congressman with a PhD is Bill Foster from Illinois. The other 49 states need to step up. 😀

  25. Rajini Rao says:

Peter Maxwell funnily enough, he does watch CNN and FoxNews every day. I’m pretty sure he saw the crowds and at least some of the signs 😏

  26. Rajini Rao says:

Chad Haney I do get fundraising emails from Foster to support the only PhD in Congress. Michael Eisen of PLoS is running in CA. Hope there are others.

  27. Rajini Rao says:

Rashid Moore haha, many fun signs. Lot’s of inside jokes. At least, the march boosted morale among scientists, if nothing else.

  28. Raju Raju says:

Rajini Raw.Hi I am bangladeshe .Now presented saudiarob .

    মোঃদেলোয়ার হোসেন

  29. Chad Haney says:

Rajini Rao, I see you’re Roy and Raw now.

  30. Rajini Rao says:

Chad Haney hii, how r u? Text pliss! 😀

  31. An absolutely great photo collection.

  32. Chad Haney says:

How r u Professor Rajini Rao?
