The company hastens to note that the portraits do not reveal any personal secrets and that your sample is destroyed to preserve privacy. So you don’t need to worry about surprise paternity suits in the future 😉

Really, Barry Ellenburg ? It’s exorbitant considering that we run DNA on gels all the time (honestly, who’s to know if the DNA is yours or not?). Printing and canvas costs shouldn’t be much. Of course, they need to make a profit 🙂

The funny thing was that the DNA in the shampoo was extracted from salmon sperm..a standard source of junk/carrier DNA we buy in bulk for the lab 🙂 I hope no one’s hair turned orange.

Like the other day I was out of commercial de-clor for my fish and needed a little, so I go to the store and the stuff they were selling had aloe vera in it.
I’ve never seen one damn fish in my life that needed aloe vera! 🙂 Or am I just old-fashioned?

If they’re doing PCR, what difference does it make if it’s your DNA? I mean they’d technically use the same primers for everyone, and give or take a few base pairs every image they produce must look the same. I also should comment that, though it adds a cool ~artistic effect, I’m not sure what’s happening with the smearing in a few of those lanes; looks like some sample mishandling/DNA fragmentation ;P

I’m not sure what the banding pattern represents, exactly. If it was RFLP, then it should detect variations between individuals, no? I should have watched more of those forensic TV shows.Â
Oh yes I do! And you’re totally right, I just figured for convenience they’d use ITS or something conserved and easy to amplify. I feel we could amplify different regions ourselves, run/image the gel, and blow it up at kinkos for less than even half their price. Now I’m tempted ;]
