Earth Hour March 31st, 8:30 pm

• To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. William Blake

• There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew. Marshall McLuhan

• We are on a spaceship; a beautiful one. It took billions of years to develop. We’re not going to get another. Now, how do we make this spaceship work? Buckminster Fuller

• In a sense, each of us is an island. In another sense, however, we are all one. For though islands appear separate, and may even be situated at great distances from one another, they are only extrusions of the same planet, Earth. J. Donald Walters

• Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, if you listen carefully, you can hear her breathing. Arundhati Roy

  1. Chad Haney says:

Wrigley Field will turn the lights out on the marquee for Earth Hour.

  2. Be heard your light, share…

  3. Rajini Rao says:

Lights off at our home and no video gaming or G+! 🙂

  4. Chad Haney says:

Rajini Rao what about your iPhone? I bet you’ll sneak onto G+ with your phone.

  5. Rajini Rao says:

Haha, I have to stay strong Chad Haney and desist! Otherwise, the Rao family will sit around the couch intent on their individual mobile devices.

  6. Chad Haney says:

There was a funny picture going around the Interweb a while ago. On the left (labeled “Then”) it showed a bunch of friends sitting around a dinner table conversing. On the right (labeled “Now”) the same friends are all looking into their phones, presumably texting, tweeting, etc. Arggh I wish I would have saved it.

  7. Rajini Rao says:

I’ll bring out the candles Chad Haney and see if we can be “civilized” (or less so?) for an hour 🙂 Mahesh Sreekandath , what is jeeping?

  8. Rajini Rao says:

Mahesh Sreekandath , thanks for reminding us that this is just a sop to our conscience 😉

  9. Rajini Rao says:

Shame on you, Mahesh Sreekandath ! We own a Prius (but that’s not what I drive, LOL). Truth is, these events raise awareness, that’s all.

  10. Rajini Rao says:

That’s okay. Just find an anti-Mahesh Sreekandath and you’ll cancel each other out 🙂

  11. Chad Haney says:

Rajini Rao as the Gearhead here, there was a funny episode on Top Gear (on BBC) where they showed a BMW M3 getting better gas millage than a Prius. If you know Top Gear, they were driving flat-out around their circuit.

  12. Rajini Rao says:

Coincidentally, Chad Haney , someone on another post made the comment that a Ford Excursion has a better carbon footprint than a Prius. I googled it, and there appears to be some chatter on this (alternatively, compared to a Hummer). I’m guessing there is some sleight of hand in there somewhere. Anyhow, you would have to pry my cold dead hands from the steering wheel of my beemer. I like the idea of driving flat out on a circuit, do you have a link for that?

  13. Chad Haney says:

People have to remember Top Gear is entertainment. Some people were upset about their episode about the electric supercar, Tesla. It was rigged for entertainment. Nevertheless, here the episode on YouTube. http://youtu.be/badoMjA_rW0

  14. Chad Haney says:

Mahesh Sreekandath for sure. People often assume that since my Cooper S is small that it gets good gas mileage. I always tell people that my gas mileage is good unless you drive how it’s meant to be driven, i.e., my mileage isn’t that good.

  15. Rajini Rao says:

Thanks, David Crowley ..I didn’t think the Blake quote was as relevant, but it’s one of my favorites so I squeezed it in 🙂

  16. 60 and more 60 min at candles, beautiful night.

  17. Tom Lee says:

Yeah right Rajini Rao No iPhone, iPod, PC, Mac…No G+ for you. How would you check and answer comments from your posts? and you can’t see my Peter Frampton music post from me either ! 🙂

  18. Chad Haney says:

It’s too bad that you can’t post pictures or videos in the comments. Here’s my reply to the gas mileage comment.

I link back to this conversation, in my post. I wonder if that works like Inception?

  19. Rajini Rao says:

Tom Lee , Peter Frampton, where?!! 🙂 I agree Chad Haney , G+ ought to let us see images in the comment box (as in FB). My car excuse? Bad drivers need the best cars 😉 P.S. nice Inception link.

  20. Rajini Rao says:

Jose M. G. Guerreiro , I am going to start cooking soon and by 8:30, we can have dinner by candlelight 🙂

  21. Tom Lee says:

Rajini Rao when you have shut all your electronics off ! hehe

  22. Rajini Rao says:

Tom Lee , Frampton is engraved in my heart so I will be hearing him serenade me while I cook, so there! (The real guys in my life magically appear only when dinner is ready).

  23. Tom Lee says:

Rajini Rao I can imagine you are singing Baby I love you way while cooking dinner (nobody around at the time, of course), when serving dinner, no singing then !.:)

  24. Rajini Rao says:

ROFL!! My singing is beyond atrocious, Tom Lee . If I was cooking with milk, it would curdle. Luckily, it is already tofu. Ah, Frampton!

  25. Tom Lee says:

I’d recommend you turn Frampton music off while cooking, the food may turn into Show me the Way , your food may turn out bad. Frampton is not known for his cooking talent.

  26. Chad Haney says:

For science or international friends that might not know what Tom Lee is talking about.

For me, what makes Frampton so cool, is the Talk box. Check out the Wiki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talkbox.

Forward to about 7″ for the Talk box if you just want to hear that part.

  27. Tom Lee says:

Chad Haney I agree, he’s the king of talk box. Nobody can play it better than him. Just listen to Do you feel like we do .!

  28. Chad Haney says:

This might be sacrilegious to the Frampton fans, but I kind of like the Big Mountain version of Baby, I love your way just a little better.

OK back to talking about Earth Hour before I start a flame war. :~).

  29. Rajini Rao says:

Chad Haney, Tom is ribbing me on an imprudent confession I made a long while back about having a college age crush on the beauteous Peter Frampton. Listening now… ♡

  30. Tom Lee says:

Sorry to go off the tangent here a little, to make the poster have some inspiration towards here cooking. Let’s get back to the science stuff ?

  31. Chad Haney says:

OK, back to Earth Hour stuff. Sorry, science take a back seat for a second. I’m not sure I’m going to leave all of my lights off in my house for security reasons. My neighborhood isn’t that bad (I mean I live a few blocks from Obama) but it is the Southside of Chicago.

  32. Rajini Rao says:

Too late, Tom Lee , I’m already listening! Luckily, Chad Haney (wisely) did not link to a video. That would have sent me into irreversible swoon resulting in no dinner for the Rao household 🙂

  33. Tom Lee says:

Turn everything in the house off, just leave the front porch light on? Obama can’t do nothing there, he’s in Washington.

But if everybody in this world doing the same thing like you do, that certainly would make a huge difference, energy conservation, greenhouse effect, and so forth…

  34. Rajini Rao says:

Wouldn’t it cost more energy to power everything up again vs. leaving it on (thinking of the dozens of computers and devices around here)?

  35. Tom Lee says:

Dealing a lot with power stuff, I think it’s the surge (ramping up) vs the time you leave the power on afterwards. I don’t think they are proportional. I always turn everything of when I don’t need. Plus nowadays, your electronics power supplies are very well designed.

  36. Rajini Rao says:

Chad Haney , this is one of my favorite Frampton songs: http://goo.gl/Z0278

Tom Lee will remember the post.

  37. Chad Haney says:

Tom Lee Obama is in Washington, but his presence is still felt in Hyde Park. I can assure you, anyone nearby knows when he’s back in Chicago (helicopters, motorcade, etc.). Even when he’s not in Hyde Park, walk by his house and you’ll get a better appreciation for my comment.

Back to the science stuff. I agree, modern electronics handle power cycling much better. I often turn my PCs and equipment off when I leave work.

Getting back to Earth Hour, don’t forget to unplug your cell phone chargers, etc. when you aren’t using them. Just Google vampire power or check out this ‘How stuff works’
