Frampton Comes Alive!

Frampton Comes Alive! Recorded live in San Francisco (where I am today), in 1975, the album brought Peter Frampton instant fame. The songs Show me the way and Do you feel like I do featured his use of the talk box guitar effect.

Although born in England, Frampton decided to become a US citizen after the 9/11 attacks (coincidentally, so did I). Frampton’s career suffered several set backs, once with a near fatal car crash in 1978, and a couple of years later when a cargo plane crashed destroying all his guitars including the black Les Paul custom that is featured on the cover of his Frampton Comes Alive album.

Here he is, with Baby I love your way

“Shadows grow so long before my eyes

And they’re moving across the page

Suddenly the day turns into night

Far away from the city”

For #MusicFriday , a fine tradition started by Tom Lee !

Bacteria are Beautiful!

Bacteria are Beautiful!

β€’ Fractal art made with cultures of the ordinary soil bacterium, Bacillus subtilis , expressing differently colored fluorescent proteins. Each image in the series zooms out to ever complex and beautiful patterns.

β€’ Researcher Fernan Frederici at Cambridge University works on Synthetic Aesthetics, and paired up with computer scientist Tom Rudge to design these complex cultures. Their eventual goal is to understand the simple rules that give rise to complex emergent behavior seen in nature whether in the patterning of an embryo or termite tunnels (http://scienceblogs.com/oscillator/2010/01/designing_emergent_behavior.php).

β€’ Different shapes emerge based on the conditions of the petri dish, the presence of nutrients and the humidity. These influence the rules of how the cells grow and respond and interact with each other, to form these amazing patterns.

“The history of life can be thought of

As a many branched tree

The five kingdoms of life

Were established early on

Bacteria

Protists- amoeba like creatures

Fungi

Plants

And Animals

We find ourselves perched on one tiny twig

In the midst of a blossoming tree of life”.

Watch for the stunning footage.
