LOL this is pretty fun way to look at things and the photo is simple amazing. We are now soooo used to tricks and Photoshop, great to see the real thing, achieved with good old fashioned patience 😉

+100 for the Quitter’s motto, Peter Lindelauf 🙂 Thank you for the weekend laughs.

  6. Unknown's avatar David Love says:

The one attributed to W. C. Fields has also been attributed to Mark Twain.

  7. Unknown's avatar Rajini Rao says:

David Love , oh well, as Abraham Lincoln said, “The trouble with quotes on the Internet is that you never know if they are genuine.” 😀

  8. Wait, Abraham Lincoln wasn’t alive when it was invented, so how did he know about it?

  9. Unknown's avatar Rajini Rao says:

    Exactly, Charles Heywood 😉

  10. The shot is amazing… But if that’s a jet, I’m the Pope. 😉

  11. Unknown's avatar Rajini Rao says:

Just for you, Gert Sønderby “Qantas Dash 8 Q400” 🙂

  12. Oo, Dash 8, the airplane that can’t land safely! 😀

  13. Unknown's avatar Rajini Rao says:

Gert Sønderby , do tell? Was this the Scarebus?

The only thing about star travle is the part where you freeze:(

  16. Unknown's avatar Joseph Price says:

    Sorry,”bad” part….

  17. Unknown's avatar Dusty Reins says:

I see no “jet” but that’s beside the point isn’t it?

  18. Unknown's avatar Rajini Rao says:

Dusty Reins , Oh you G plussers always catch me out 🙂 Edited for you and for Gert Sønderby

  19. There was a string of accidents in Denmark with Dash 8 planes, where the undercarriage blew out on landing. Nobody was hurt, but the airline in question spent a lot of time answering some very pointed questions. Don’t know if it was about the plane type, or the airline’s maintenance of it.

  20. Unknown's avatar Rajini Rao says:

Marian Wirth , instantly recognizable Banksy, isn’t it. Particularly apt with Konstantin Makov ‘s link to PF’s Goodbye Blue Sky. Drew Sowersby , the man’s a genius for finding the perfect music for anything. His music choices for my science posts are like a match made in heaven 🙂

  21. Unknown's avatar Marian Wirth says:

Rajini Rao I insist on being recognized independently instead of being tied to your other fans like Konstantin Makov and Drew Sowersby. We are all individuals, aren’t we?

  22. Unknown's avatar Rajini Rao says:

Here you go, your very own fan comment box Marian Wirth 😉

  23. Unknown's avatar Marian Wirth says:

Rajini Rao Thanks. I mean, seriously, using social media to cram three people into one comment – what were you thinking? 😉

  24. Unknown's avatar Rajini Rao says:

Consider me appropriately schooled and repentant, O Social Media Guru! 🙂 🙂

Robert The Bruce Legend “if at first you don’t succeed, try try again.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_the_Bruce#Legends

Perhaps William Hickson wrote the words to the spidery legend.

  26. Unknown's avatar Rajini Rao says:

I love that story about Robert Bruce too, Kevin Clift !

  38. Unknown's avatar Rajini Rao says:

Both totally awesome pictures, John Spade !Thank you for sharing them here. Is there a story behind how you got them or was it just persistence + good luck?

  39. Unknown's avatar John Spade says:

Rajini Rao hehe, yeah, sorry to crash your thread. “Oh oh I got that!” Some luck but mostly keeping an eye out. The telescope one was a bit of luck because of full moon and zoom meant one chance. No crop on this shot. ( http://500px.com/photo/3184903 ) The full moon and the 737 AAL487 from PHI to MIA, I was just trying out new focal reducer ( down to about 1300mm ) on telescope and I saw the plane coming. It looked like it was going to cross so I just waited and hit the single frame. Settings could have been better (higher shutter ) but when I saw it was going to cross a mostly full moon I didn’t want to bump anything. It wasn’t the clearest night, but once a year type shot so I’ll take it.

The second ( http://500px.com/photo/4617385 ) was handheld 300mm plus crop of AWE184 headed from FLL to PHX. Leaving Fort Lauderdale they often make a turn above my house. This one turned early and hit enough altitude to catch the already set sun and then I fired a few frames as it approached the waxing moon. Sometimes I shoot the planes if it looks right while I am waiting for birds to fly by in the evening.

Because our winds off the ocean in South Florida are usually the same, the approaches and departures are fairly predictable. Hopefully, I’ll get a few more this year.

No need for apologies, John Spade . With pictures like these, feel free to crash in on my posts anytime! 🙂 I like how the details on the moon contrast with the shadow of the Boeing across it in your picture.
